Iñaki Sanz, MD is the Mason I. Lowance Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Director of the Lowance Center for Human Immunology and a Georgia Research Alliance Distinguished Scholar in Human Immunology at Emory University. He is the Co-Leader of the Autoimmunity Centers of Excellence and a member of the Immune Tolerance Network Steering Committee and of the ITN Autoimmunity Assessment Group.  His research is focused on understanding human B cells differentiation, diversity and regulatory programs; their role in SLE and other pathogenic and protective responses; and the development of B cell-targeting therapies.

Dr. Sanz received his medical degree from the University of Santander in Spain, trained in Molecular Immunology in the laboratory of Dr. Capra at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and completed a fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio.  He was Chief of the Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology Unit at the University of Rochester from 1996 until his move to Emory in 2012.  He is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and received the 2019 Distinguished Investigator Award of the Lupus Research Alliance for his discovery of new effector B cell pathways in SLE.
